Mom’s Granola

Posted by Sheri on Friday, May 25th, 2012

This is probably the first recipe out of Flour that I don’t absolutely love.

One thing that following other people’s recipes for granola has taught me is that there are certain things I really like in granola, and certain things I don’t. This version contains wheat germ and sesame seeds. I didn’t know it until now, but those go into my “no” pile. Dried cranberries, too – but I already knew that, so I used dried cherries here instead.

Other things that describe the perfect granola: crispy, salty, clumpy. Must contain oats. I like it with coconut oil and coconut flakes. Acceptable nuts and seeds are pepitas, almonds, chia and hemp seed. Maybe walnuts. Dried fruit is fine as long as it’s either dried cherries or blueberries. I’m not particular about the sweetener, but if it’s honey I’m extra happy. Cinnamon and other warm spices can make a good granola great.

I think I’m slowly zeroing in on my own perfect recipe for granola, which is what I love about it – it’s so versatile, it can be tailored exactly to each person’s particular tastes. Find the recipe for Joanne’s granola here.
